Green For All Calls for Empathy and Innovation as Trump Administration Approves Clean Car Rollbacks

OAKLAND, CA [March 30, 2020] — Today,  the Trump Administration announced a final rule, rolling back a critical program under the Clean Air Act and Energy Policy Conservation Act that helps our cars run cleaner and get better gas mileage. Clean Cars standards cut carbon and toxic tailpipe emissions, save consumers money at the pump, reduce air pollution that impacts public health, and spurs innovation and jobs.

Green For All National Director Michelle Romero released the following statement regarding the Trump Administration’s final rollback to the nation’s Clean Car standards:

“Rolling back the nation’s Clean Car rules couldn’t have come at a worse time. If nothing else, the Coronavirus pandemic has demonstrated how fragile public health is and how interdependent we are on each other. We must have more empathy for the people who will be affected most by this decision, just as we are learning to have more empathy for grocery workers and our nation’s working class. It shouldn’t take a pandemic to care for people.”

“Toxic tailpipe emissions are concentrated in communities of color and low-income communities who will surely face the greatest pollution and health impacts, and this decision should concern everyone. What is good for clean air and the environment is also good for the economy. The United States risks losing its global competitiveness with this rule.”

“We should be encouraging innovation in clean vehicle manufacturing and pollution reduction technologies, not weakening emissions standards.”

“The rollback will eliminate the opportunity to create tens of thousands of new jobs which our country desperately needs as we face soaring unemployment numbers. Long-term economic recovery will require preparing America’s workforce for the jobs of the future.”

“More empathy and innovation is what this country will need to get us back on track.”
