Green For All on Trump Plan to Overhaul Longstanding Environmental Protections for Major Infrastructure Projects
Group Calls Proposal Reckless, Backward-Thinking
WASHINGTON, D.C. [01/09/20]—Today, Green For All, a program of Dream Corps, released the following statement in reaction to a newly announced proposal by the Trump Administration to effectively disregard the need for a climate and environmental impact assessment of major infrastructure projects like highways and pipelines.
“At the expense of the health and safety of the American people, President Trump has just announced his intention to rip up decades of critical environmental protections,” said Green For All National Director Michelle Romero. “In modern American history, our infrastructure builders have had to assess and review the environmental impacts of major projects like highways and pipelines to know and be able to mitigate potential health and environmental impacts. Which, frankly, is commonsense. As a group leading efforts to bring principles of equity, fairness, and opportunity into our nation’s new infrastructure projects, we believe our economic competitiveness must be based on a clean economy that protects the health of American families—including the most vulnerable and underserved communities—from pollutants and emissions. It’s not one or the other. This reckless plan takes us backwards and is not what we need. A 21st century America demands 21st century thinking.”
Green For All, a program of Dream Corps, has long called for equitable, low-carbon transportation policies that take into consideration and are responsive to the needs of low-income, underserved American communities. Recently, the program rolled out its equity principle policy toolkit for the Transportation and Climate Initiative, a multi-region transportation plan that is expected to be developed across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast Corridor of the United States. Their toolkit, Designing an Equitable Cap-and-Invest Program for Transportation, provides specific recommendations and policy guidance to help state officials craft and finalize their forthcoming multi-state “cap-and-invest” program.
