Women are now the fastest-growing population behind bars. Over the last 30 years, the number of women in prison has skyrocketed by 700%. While bipartisan reforms have rippled across the country, the needs of currently and formerly incarcerated women have largely been ignored.
80% of women in prison are mothers, yet they are sent hundreds of miles from their children, making it impossible to visit. Dream Corps is working to help women across the country impacted by the broken criminal justice system. We’ve made progress in 12 states to restore dignity to women in prison. This year, we introduced bills in four more states to build on this progress. Click here to learn more. We’re fighting to get financial relief to millions of families chained to a criminal record. About the program
The 100 Women Matter movement was created as a one-year program for women recently released from prison. In partnership with We 2 Matter, Dream Corps JUSTICE has created this unique one-year campaign that empowers 100 formerly incarcerated women with resources to reenter society through job training, employment, and counseling to help reestablish a productive life.
100 Women Matter provides critical re-entry services for women with a goal to amplify support for women across the country who are disenfranchised and in need of representation and resources. Through the support of our re-entry partners, we connect women with social service providers and employers, enabling them to gain economic stability and provide for their children. Our re-entry partners include ARC – California, Ardella’s House, Family Preservation Project, Fourth Dawn, Giving Others Dreams, Ladies of Hope Ministry, Mississippi Center for Re-Entry, and Standing United.
Our 100 Women are a list of participants who are most vulnerable, selected from the Dream Corps Empathy Network, a national coalition of leaders committed to sharing their stories of involvement with the justice system and working to contribute to their communities. This campaign launched on Mother’s Day and provided these women with a special first Mother’s Day back with their families.
The one-year program will include resources like vocational skills training, transport, clothing, meals, banking, hygiene, mental health, physical health, entertainment, and virtual education. On Mother’s Day weekend, these women received a ‘Digital Gift Basket’ including gift card codes from Uber to pay for transportation. We also offered access to 1-on-1 job training. Babe Wine, Dose of Roses, and Beyond Meat donated products for a Mother’s Day weekend celebration at Tyson Ranch.
