“All I Want For Christmas is a Green New Deal”
Green For All lights up the sky in cities across the country this holiday season to demand House Democrats support a Green New Deal
OAKLAND, CA -- Between December 21-31, Green For All and the Backbone Campaign will light up cities across the country projecting the message “All I want for Christmas is a Green New Deal” and other messages of support on local buildings. The organizations expect hundreds of people on the city streets to witness the incredible light display, which is aimed at bringing local attention to the national prospect of a Green New Deal, a mass mobilization of resources to combat climate change and strengthen the economy at the same time.
Representative-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, along with a growing number of Democratic colleagues and organizations, has been asking Rep. Nancy Pelosi to create a select committee on a Green New Deal. One week ago, 1,000 young people even staged a sit-in at her D.C. office. But late Thursday night, Pelosi announced her plan to create a committee focused on climate change, but not task it with creating a Green New Deal. She also selected Rep. Castor (D-FL) to chair the committee, not Ocasio-Cortez as many believed she would. Castor has indicated she will not require members to sign a No Fossil Fuel Money pledge to serve on the committee, which was another component of Ocasio-Cortez’s request. Green For All, Backbone Campaign, and Sunrise Movement worry these actions signal that House Democrats may not intend to pursue climate action with the level of ambition set forth by Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal proposal, to make progress on a timeline consistent with climate science. The organizations say this is not the end and will continue to press members of Congress to support a Green New Deal.
A landmark IPCC report that showed we have less than 12 years to address global climate change to avoid catastrophic consequences has reinvigorated climate activists to press for bold solutions, and a new Yale study showed a Green New Deal has strong bipartisan support among registered voters.
Green For All national director Michelle Romero believes a Green New Deal would not only tackle climate change, but could help address the rising cost of living and decreasing quality of life for many Americans: “Ocasio-Cortez’s proposal for a Green New Deal is really smart because it would address poverty and pollution at the same time. Low-income households pay the greatest percentage of their income on housing, energy, and transportation costs. Massive investments from a Green New Deal toward renewable energy, energy efficiency, and transportation electrification in underserved communities would go a long way toward reducing the cost of living, improving quality of life, and creating jobs for millions of Americans.”
Atlanta resident Daniel Hanley who will participate in the creative action in his community on Friday Dec. 21st said, “The climate crisis is a dire emergency that threatens us all, especially the most vulnerable and marginalized of the working class worldwide. Our beacon is an urgent call to action: we must democratize our economy and seize power from the unsustainable energy corporations that have thus far dictated policy, endangering our future in pursuit of profit. In 2019, Dr. King's beloved community of Atlanta is demanding a Green New Deal to revolutionize our energy infrastructure in a way that uplifts the working class and extends solidarity to all our family and friends on the front lines of the climate crisis."
WHAT: Messages stating “All I want for Christmas is a Green New Deal,” “#GreenNewDeal” and “GreenForAll.org” projected onto buildings using light.
