Caressa Nguyen is of the Ione Band of Miwok from California and is completing a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental studies with a focus on Food Systems and Economics at the Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA. Caressa is passionate about reclaiming, restoring and protecting her Miwok homelands in California, as well as in the Philippines and Vietnam. She’s interested in discussing how indigenous peoples are impacted by the climate crisis, such as the links researchers have found between growing temperatures and growing rates of diabetes, which are particularly high in indigenous communities. Since diabetes affects hydration and as the climate gets hotter, she worries about the public health crises that indigenous people face as a result of climate change.
